The calculator uses standard estimating assumptions for material volume, waste, coverage and ordering allowances. Actual quantities vary by material, supplier, site conditions and installation method. We use real material bulk densities and compaction coefficients, so your orders match actual site needs. ⌈x⌉ means rounded up to the next whole unit.
Patio Area & Perimeter
L-shape: Area = (AL × AW) + (BL × BW) · Perimeter = 2 × (max(AL, BL) + (AW + BW))
Circle: Area = π × (D ÷ 2)² · Perimeter = π × D
Worked example: a 20 × 15 ft rectangle = 300 sq ft, with a (20 + 15) × 2 = 70 ft perimeter.
Pro rule of thumb: All math runs in square feet internally, then converts for display — ft, m, yd or cm.
Paver Count & Cut Buffer
Pavers = ⌈(Area ÷ paver sq ft) × waste⌉
Worked example: (4 × 8) ÷ 144 = 0.222 sq ft/brick → ⌈(300 ÷ 0.222) × 1.08⌉ = 1,458 pavers.
Pro rule of thumb: A 4×8" brick covers 0.222 sq ft. Cut buffers: running bond 1.08, basketweave 1.12, herringbone 1.15, curved/borders 1.20.
Base Gravel (#57 / CR-6 / DGA)
Tons = yd³ × 1.4 (loose bulk density)
Worked example: ((300 × 4 ÷ 12) ÷ 27) × 1.15 = 4.26 yd³ → × 1.4 = 5.96 tons.
Pro rule of thumb: 27 ft³ per cubic yard; the 1.15 adds 15% for compaction, and crushed stone's default loose bulk density is ≈ 1.4 tons per yd³ — actual density varies by aggregate type, moisture and supplier.
ASTM C33 Bedding Sand Layer
Worked example: ⌈(300 × 1 ÷ 12) ÷ 0.5⌉ = 50 bags.
Pro rule of thumb: 1× 50 lb bag ≈ 0.5 ft³, and the default 1" bed is the ICPI / ASTM C33 standard. Never compact the sand bed before laying pavers.
Polymeric Joint Locking Sand
Worked example: max(1, ⌈300 ÷ 75⌉) = 4 bags.
Pro rule of thumb: One bag sweeps ≈ 75 sq ft of 1/8" joints. Wide joints (up to ½") drop to ~35 sq ft per bag. Never apply over damp pavers.
Perimeter Snap-Edge Restraints
Spikes = ⌈Perimeter × 0.7⌉
Worked example: a 70 ft perimeter → ⌈70 ÷ 6⌉ = 12 strips + ⌈70 × 0.7⌉ = 49 spikes.
Pro rule of thumb: One 10-inch steel spike roughly every 12–18" pins each strip — that's the 0.7-per-foot ratio.
Geotextile Fabric
Worked example: ⌈300 × 1.1⌉ = 330 sq ft.
Pro rule of thumb: The 1.1 adds 10% so cut-and-overlap seams still cover the full footprint. The single cheapest upgrade in a patio build.
Cost & DIY Savings
Savings = max(0, Contractor − DIY total)
Worked example: DIY materials ≈ $2,525 + (300 sq ft × $12 labor) = pro ≈ $6,125 → savings ≈ $3,600.
